If you are a true chocolate brownie lover, then this collection of best brownie recipes is for you.
Definition of True Chocolate Brownie Lover: (noun) Someone who delights in savoring different brownie flavors and textures. This person will pass every cookie, cake, pie, or candy up for a piece of the fudgy goodness that is a homemade brownie. S/he does not turn up the nose at a pan of made-from-a-box brownies, but is a connoisseur of the most chocolate-y and best brownie recipes.
This is a collection of the six best brownie recipes I’ve found. All are worth a try. Some of them I keep in regular rotation, because if you’re ready to move on to something new, why not try yet another brownie variation? 🙂
And, yes, I know that I’m being inconsistent after my month of sugar free snacks. But one must relax occasionally, right? (In my case, when brownies are at stake, relaxing happens more than occasionally!)

Aunt Sue’s / Hershey’s Best Brownies
My family called these Aunt Sue’s Brownies because my Aunt Sue used to make them when we would visit the family farm. It was owned by her branch of the family now and had been homesteaded over 100 years ago by our great-great-somebodies. This is one of the best brownie recipes for a large group of people. It’s so over-the-top with the frosting that even a small piece is satisfying.

Best Cocoa Brownies
When I moved out of my parents’ home while I was in college, I wanted a recipe that didn’t require melting chocolate and made a smaller batch than Aunt Sue’s recipe. So I searched and searched until I found this priceless gem. I still make it frequently when just one friend is coming over, or for my husband and me. (They’re so dark-chocolatey and dense that they’re “girl brownies,” but he enjoys them every once in a while!) Also, even if you don’t plan to make these, check out the recipe on Smitten Kitchen. I love her way of describing these brownies!

Salted Dulce de Leche Brownies
This recipe sat in my “to-make-soon” backlog for much longer than it should have. These brownies are so amazingly, deliciously rich. Especially for someone who has experienced the delight of dulce de leche in a Latino country. I think dulce de leche is so much better than caramel.
For a little honesty, though: I now make this recipe WITHOUT the dulce de leche because my husband says it’s too overwhelmingly sweet. Which is true. The recipe itself couldn’t be better as a best brownie recipe base, especially with that touch of sea salt on top to balance the chocolate sweetness.

Chocolate Torte
Our version of this chocolate torte is just a bit lighter in texture and sweetness than the brownies listed above. This torte (actually called Berry-Berry Brownie Torte) was the recipe used at our wedding. I hate most wedding cakes, and I didn’t want to make my guests eat something I didn’t want to eat myself. Voila! I’ve made this recipe (just plain, with nothing on top) for guests before to rave reviews, as well.

Bombshell Brownies
These brownies are my current go-to for a crowd. Packed with chocolate chips, with a sweet crust that forms on the top, they’re just as good (we think sometimes better) the second day. So you can make them ahead of time with very little effort, cut them into small pieces (because they’re intense!), and serve a lot of happy people. We especially like these brownies refrigerated once they’re already cooled down–the cold does something lovely to them.

Mug Brownie
Finally, here is what I think is the best brownie recipe among the mug-in-a-microwave recipes. It’s not as delicious as any of the recipes above, but it’s a quick and satisfying treat. I made it fairly often when David and I were newlyweds and still living in a small apartment. There was something so special about being able to quickly stir him up something sweet after he came home from a long day of work. I have seen this same recipe on multiple websites, so I’m not sure which to attribute, since I saved the recipe without saving the source (and made my own changes). Here it is:
Best Brownie in a Mug Recipe
1/4 c. white flour
1/4 c. brown sugar
2 TB plain cocoa powder (no hot chocolate mixes!)
Pinch of salt
2 TB vegetable oil
2 TB milk or water
2 TB dark chocolate chips
Instructions:
- In a heatproof coffee cup, stir together the dry ingredients until no lumps remain. Stir in the oil and milk until you have a thick paste. Stir in the chocolate chips. (You can also add nuts.)
- Microwave on high for 1 minute. Take a look after 30 seconds since microwaves vary. It will be done when it’s springy on top but you can still see some gooeyness. The chocolate chips will have melted inside into a wonderful sweet spot. Eat while it’s still warm. Yummy!
