Kruger: Growing Together

Book Reviews

Mini Book Review 12: a short but sweet summary of Growing Together: Taking Mentoring beyond Small Talk and Prayer Requests, by Melissa Kruger.

Kruger’s The Envy of Eve was one of my favorite reads last year, so I looked for more from her when creating my booklist for 2021. Recently she wrote Growing Together, a book about mentoring and discipleship, and I finally read it in November of this year.

I didn’t find a lot of new information in Growing Together. But I did find it well worth the time I spent reading it, mostly because it’s so good to be reminded of gospel truth. This book’s layout is ideal for using in partnership with another reader, either a mentor or a mentee, and I would love to go through it again with an older woman. (Or a younger woman, for that matter.) I think it would spark some excellent discussions and help us understand what spiritual accountability actually looks like.

Favorite Quotes from Growing Together:

“In a world that encourages you to “treat yourself,” the most important gift you can give yourself is time with Jesus in his word.”

(P. 43-44)

“If we want to impact the world, we must first be impacted by the word.”

(P. 45)

“Daily recognizing God’s forbearance toward us allows us to patiently forbear with others.”

(P. 98)

Quote on Enduring Trials:

“When we forget that the Christian life is a battle, all of life can feel like a surprise attack. Our mistaken understanding of the Christian life as easy and trouble-free can make us question God‘s goodness when bullets are flying or we’re wounded and struggling to take a step forward. We’re not prepared for the fight, so we’re defenseless against the enemy.”

(P. 108)

“Contentment is a settled spirit, a quiet confidence that God is always at work for good.”

(P. 124)
