Mini Book Review #20: Your Best Year Ever: A 5-Step Plan for Achieving Your Most Important Goals, by Michael Hyatt.
Your Best Year Ever gives great advice about changing your mentality to one of success rather than scarcity. I especially appreciated Hyatt’s emphasis on gratitude and a positive attitude. What is one thing I took away from this book to apply immediately? Make my goals exciting! I’ve learned before about making goals specific and measurable—my education-major background gave me that much! But very few authors talk about the importance of engaging with our goals emotionally this way. Hyatt’s SMARTER framework is as follows:
Goals should be
- Specific
- Measurable
- Actionable
- Risky
- Time-Keyed
- Exciting
- Relevant
[Note: Christians may note some statements that put one in mind of the Word of Faith movement. (Instead of worrying about money, he began to “say” (49) he had all the money he needed, which is reminiscent of WOF rites of confession.)]
Favorite Quotes from Your Best Year Ever:
“News organizations are predisposed to show you negative news because fear triggers the more primitive parts of our brains and keeps our eyes glued to the threat.”
Michael Hyatt (p. 41)
“You and I should embrace discomfort for at least three reasons, whether we deliberately choose to or it simply happens to us. First, comfort is overrated. It doesn’t lead to happiness. It often leads to self-absorption and discontent. Second, discomfort is a catalyst for growth. It makes us yearn for something more. It forces us to change, stretch, and adapt. Third, discomfort signals progress. When you push yourself to grow, you will experience discomfort, but there’s profit in the pain.”
Michael Hyatt (p. 134)
