A mini review of Julie Bogart’s The Brave Learner: Finding Everyday Magic in Homeschool, Learning, and Life.
Happy inspiration for keeping our kids’ excitement for learning alight. In The Brave Learner, Bogart helps us realize that we are the right parents for our kids. We are even the right teachers for our kids, in spite of our weaknesses in algebra or philosophy.
Bogart’s ideas from her own years of homeschooling are invaluable. She suggests randomly spreading out tables of inspiration for our children to create art or tinker with bolts. Her descriptions of book clubs sound more fun than anything most of us have experienced in our educations. And her reminder that our kids are worth more than our systems and schedules needs to be repeated often.
Whether you homeschool your children, are a teacher who is at home with your kids during the summers, or are simply an involved parent, I highly recommend reading The Brave Learner to spark (or rejuvenate) your own joy and curiosity.
Note: I disagree with her stance on chores because I believe that work is an essential and happy part of education.
